Art Therapist Irene Whitehead

I am an Art Psychotherapist based in South West London and am available to work in many areas of Greater London and South East England.

In my therapeutic practice I work with compassion and commitment to create a safe and nurturing environment, in which to support and encourage my clients in achieving healing, emotional growth and change. My therapeutic approach is primarily psychodynamic and philosophically based in attachment theory and I use the principles of mentalisation or mindfulness where appropriate. In some cases of severe trauma I would use the CATT technique (Children’s Accelerated Trauma Treatment).

I work in private practice and in mainstream and special needs education, with children and young people and with parents and children together, and adults. I also work in community health and museum and gallery settings, designing and delivering creative and therapeutic programmes for families and adult ‘health and wellbeing’ groups. I have also worked in Adult Mental Health in the NHS, and with young people in CAMHS.

My interest in Fine Art practice has meant that for many years I have enjoyed being involved and employed in the creative industries as well as in my own creative practices, mainly in 3D-making, drawing and printmaking.

I tutor children and young people in art, and have for many years run creative workshops for children, young people and adults; in private, educational and community settings. Recently I contributed work to the touring exhibition ‘Art+Healing’ hosted by the Art Therapy charity ‘Art Therapy 4 All’.
